Maryland politics have been murky for as long as I've had any passing interest (since about 1980). The Democrat rank and file of the state is to the Right of the Republican national party, which leaves the state Republican party in the hands of Royalists, Bull Moosers, and Pearl Harbor Truthers. The Stonewall Democratic Club, in Baltimore (to which I was once taken by a subversive friend), would give the Democrat National Committee hives, if they had any principles. And the Political Class in the state doesn't give a fat damn what the electorate may THINK, so long as they do what they are told.

Sort of like New Jersey, but with better seafood and no sign of a Republican revival, ever.
